Name: Bière Noire à L’avoine
Brewery: St-Ambroise McAuslan
ABV: 5%
Appearance: Very dark, 2+ fingers of head with very good retention, Totally opaque.
Smell: Lots of malt, coffee, earthen aromas.
Taste: Malty, coffee, caramel, mocha after tones.
Mouth Feel: Thick, Creamy, Touch of bubbles.
Drinkability: Very smooth, much lighter than I expected, went down real smooth.
Overall: This is the iced coffee of beers. At times it seemed that I was drinking an iced mocha latte. Excellent malt flavors. Tons of complexity. This flavors in this beer grew and changed as I got further into my glass. An excellent oatmeal stout.
Grade: A-
Name: The Physics
Brewery: Brewdog
ABV: 5%
Appearance: Medium amber, medium clarity, 1 finger of head with slow dissipation and lots of rising bubbles.
Smell: Grainy, musky, touch of hops.
Taste: The barley malt really comes through strongly on this one, rich, thick flavors with a hint of boozyness at the beginning and end.
Mouth Feel: Semi thick and yet light and bubbly.
Drinkability: Medium high. Would be a good deal higher if not for the boozy start and finish.
Overall: This was an alright beer, but there just wasn’t anything too great or exciting about it. I liked the malt characteristics a lot, but I pretty much forgot about this beer within a couple minutes after drinking it.
I will definitely be trying another Brewdog brew some time soon (actually, there’s one in my fridge right now.) as I have high hopes for this brewery. I first heard about this brewery when they started working with Rogue (I believe as there US distributor, but I’m not sure about that…), one of my personal favorite breweries. I later heard about them when they released Tactical Nuclear Penguin ( a 32% brew! ). I look forward to getting my taste buds on a Zeitgeist ( I really like black lager
), but no luck finding one so far.
Anyways, back to the review…
Grade: C+
Name: Longboard Island Lager
Brewery: Kona
ABV: 4.6%
Appearance: Light blond, minimal head, medium clarity
Smell: Very mild hops, some sweetness
Taste: Sweet, almost a bit grainy, some mild fruitiness, apricots? peaches?
Mouth Feel: Light, mostly flat but very crisp, sparkles a bit on the tongue
Drinkability: Very drinkable, cool and sweet
Overall: It occurs to me that I use the adjective sweet a bit too often, but I don’t really know how else to describe this beer. This beer is crisp, light, refreshing, and delicious, but more than anything, its sweet. This beer was a pleasant surprise as I have not been happy with the other Kona brews I have tried. I’m glad I decided to give this one a chance.
Grade: B (maybe B-)
Hello,
What a strange January we have been having.
For the last week or so it has been in the high 40’s. Pretty much all of the snow has melted away and overfilled the rivers, causing fields and roads to flood. The frozen sheets of ice sitting on the surface of the rivers have buckled and up-heaved resulting in the craziest winter landscape I have ever seen (I will try and get some pictures). Humongous boulders of ice are tumbled and stacked in giant piles. Huge flat sheets of ice look like they’ve been laser cut and placed willy nilly amongst the debris. Totally amazing.
Now things are back to what one would expect of Vermont in late January. It is currently one degree and sunny. Snow is falling and there is a 28 mph wind blowing from the WNW. Everything is both beautiful and bleak.
Pottery is going very well and both Liza and I have made some pretty awesome stuff. Nothing has been glazed or final fired yet so no pictures, but be patient. Hurry up and wait is definitely a big part of the pottery process.
School is also going smoothly. I am in the last week of Geometry and Measurement and barring any sudden surprises, I am expecting top marks. Next up is Fundamentals of Physics which I am looking forward to. I have long been intrigued by physics and, if nothing else, this should give me a chance to talk and learn more about it.
That’s all for now.
If you haven’t already, make sure you swing by The Daily Sleaze and take a look see. If you wanted you could make it your home page. It makes for a nice little daily calendar
Arividerchi!
Presenting to the world…
THE DAILY SLEAZE!!!
Starting today, Liza and I are going to attempt to take and post a photo of our cat Aziza (a.k.a. Sleaze) every day at The Daily Sleaze.
Are we ridiculous? Yeah, probably.
Do we care? Not a bit.
Do we love our cat? AbsoFrickinLoutely.

I just found Wondermark Comics (linked here from XKCD).
They are my new favorite thing. Maybe they will be yours too
So, here we are at the beginning of the tens.
For me, much is the same as it was a couple of months ago when we were closing out the oughts. Work is still going well and has slowed down (ever so slightly) with the conclusion of the Holidays. I am back at school and things seem to be going well on that front. I am currently taking Geometry and Measurement which (so far) has been easy breezy. Home life has settled back into its pleasantly familiar routines. The Sleaze is still fat and happy and continues to be crazier with every passing day. In short, all is well and good and as it should be here in Montpelier.
The weather has been extremely mild as of late which is wonderful for everything except our ongoing snowshoeing plans. My running routine has been pretty shook up by the weather and the cold and the lack of daylight. I could name about a thousand excuses for only having been out once this week, but I won’t (well, other than those three
). I am planning on going running today just as soon as I finish the laundry.
Just in case you where wondering, that’s where I am now. Sitting here at the Laser Wash with those other poor souls not fortunate enough to have in home laundry. For those of you out there reading this that do have a washer and dryer… go spend some time being appreciative. Tell them how much you value the service and convenience they provide. Tell them that, while you make take them for granted from time to time, you are really happy that they are in your life. Moving on…
Liza and I started pottery last week. It was really fun for me to go back to working with the clay and watching as my hands produced these (mostly) perfect bowls and flower pots. For any of you that are out there thinking “I’ve always wanted to give pottery a try”, go do it. It’s fun and much easier than you might think. Plus, after you’ve had a whole bunch of fun throwing and glazing your pieces, you get to keep them forever. You get to drink out of them and eat out of them and show them off. That’s A+ Awesome in my book.
Liza is some kind of pottery genius. After establishing that she was the only one in the class that didn’t have any recent potting experience, she showed us all up by expertly creating three large bowls in our very first session. I am always amazed at how easy she makes acts of artistic excellence seem. I swear, I could point the same camera at the same thing under the same conditions and I would get a picture while she would get a piece of art (btw, every awesome picture you have seen on this blog, she has taken). Don’t even get me started with drawing or painting. Artists are amazing and also A+ Awesome.
JUMP FORWARD IN TIME TO 8:00 pm
So… running was good. The laundry is all folded and put away. Dinner has been eaten and the dishes have been done. I would say that is about time for this post to come to an end.
Much more to come later
G’Night
Hello all,
Just checking in
Not too much going on here…
School has started up again and Geometry and Measurement has begun. For those of you that are wondering how things turned out with Human Computer Interaction and Usability, I ended up with a 83.6. Not bad considering my horrendous start to the class.
Work is still pretty crazy. Between people getting sick and needing days off for other reasons, I seem to be getting called in to cover a shift once or twice a week… Less than awesome I must say. But, good news! Liza and I are about to share a three day weekend. Add to that the giant pork shoulder that I’ve reserved at the Co-Op and my and Liza’s first pottery class on Tuesday and you have yourself some good times ahead.
Anyways, I promise I will put up a more interesting post sometime soon.
Hope all is well for everyone.
Well the race is over…
It went very well with minimal slipping and sliding
The snow started falling steadily about an hour before the race so there was a nice fresh coat of snow throughout the course. The first half of the route was much more uphill than I expected… Luckily it was mostly downhill on the way back. I thought I was going to die climbing the last hill
I would love to post a time here, but I’m not really sure what my time was. I crossed the finish line at a totally improbable 23:50ish, only to find out that something was wrong with the clock. They will be posting the times on the cvrunners.org website some time soon, but as of now, no official time. Oh, and no t-shirt either >,..,< That makes me 0/2 on sweet race day tees. Oh well, life goes on.
I just finished making some mac’n'cheese for some friends that are coming over later tonight. I also have three good sized avocados to turn into 1 good sized bowl of guacamole. Should be good times.
Before the race, The Sleaze was feeling a bit restless
so we decided to take a field trip out into the snow.
She handled it pretty well… She just kind of went back and forth between being totally terrified of every passing car and trying to act nonchalant. She cracks me up
One last thing… Lucas has an excellent beer blog over at nighthops.com so if you’ve come here looking at beer, check out some of his stuff… it’s much better than mine
That being said, the last couple of times I have gone to post some cool article or picture that I have found, I find that Lucas has beaten me to the punch. Not this time. I found this on one of the blogs I read.
There is also a bigger, easier to read, but less pretty version… (click the picture to see it’s full size)
That’s all for now.
Hasta
